The 2024 Festival of Golf was held at Branston Golf and Country Club on Monday 12th August. The day promised to be a hot one, with the temperatures due to be in the high 30's. Notts team looked fantastic in red and were raring to go in the final league matches of the year. The first 3 groups got onto the course and a thunderstorm broke overhead, so a rapid retreat to the clubhouse, a 20-minute delay and then the action was back on.
The Handicap team were in competition with Shropshire, playing for 5th and 6th place in the handicap league. We have had a good year, but been pipped to matches throughout the season. Playing Shropshire is always competitive and this was no exception. Mya Neal led the team onto the course and had a great win, Millie Browne continued the run with another comfortable win. Olivia Wilson took her very close match to the last hole, but also won. Amelia Nugent and Tilly Bridge finished the matches and while they didn't win on this occasion, the team secured a 3:2 win overall and gained 5th place in the league. Well done girls!
The Scratch team were playing Staffordshire. The singles players of Millie Marsh, Amelia Hogg (County Junior Captain), Maddison Clarke (County Junior Vice-Captain) and foursomes pairing Lexi Williams-Green and Amelia Hothersall, went out trying to achieve the highest placement in the league possible. It's been a difficult year with other teams not having full (or any) teams on occasions, but Notts have consistently produced full teams and been competitive throughout. Staffs went out strong, Millie had a ding-dong battle throughout with the lead changing hands throughout the game, but eventually Staffs won, Amelia Hogg also had a tough match recording another loss. Maddison had a great win and the foursomes pairing also had an easy win, a feature of Lexi's year in foursomes. The final result of a halved match put Notts into fourth place overall.
The great part of the festival of Golf is that all abilities are able to play on the day, for those under a 40 handicap was a stableford competition over 9-holes, for those with no handicap or above 40, there was a 9-hole competition on forward tees. Notts fielded 8 players in the 9-hole competitions.
Tilly Hardy represented us in the stableford competition off her new handicap, which just brought her down into this group. Well done Tilly. Darcey Swift, Jessica Tombs, Kara Bradley, Betsey Corcoran, Alexa Sheppard, Isobel Stevenson and Emily Wood played in the forward tee competition and had a great time.
All the players then went onto the chipping and putting challenges and finally the Pirate Golf. Congratulations to Maddison Clarke, Betsey Corcoran, Isobel Stevenson and Millie Browne for winning prizes in the 9-hole competitions, chipping challenges and the scratch and handicap Pirate Golf .
